Application:
A multi-mineral
lick block for ruminants
Net Weights:
40kg, 100kg,
1000kg
Feeding Instructions:
To avoid urea
poisoning, always feed starving stock good quality hay and start
them on salt-based blocks containing 7-10% urea (Peak 50, Sulfos),
then to a 10% urea molasses-based block and then to a 20% urea molasses-based
block. Place out sufficient blocks to avoid overcrowding of stock.
Initially, the consumption rate will be higher than average, but
higher rates of consumption will drop after an initial "gorging"
period.
Average Consumption
Rates:
The following
rates will increase or decrease according to varying pasture conditions.
Dry Season 10% Urea: Cattle: 80g - 110g per head/day Sheep: 20g
- 30g per head/day

When to Use
Dry Season 10% Urea:
When designing
supplements for ruminants, the primary objective is feeding the
microorganisms in the rumen which require an array of minerals and
trace elements to process feed. Nitrogen (urea), phosphorus and
sulphur are some of the major elements required for the synthesis
of amino acids and protein. When these elements are balanced the
effect is an efficient breakdown of dry and fibrous feeds, such
as stubble and dry pastures.
Olsson's Dry
Season blocks are an easy, cost-effective method of delivering a
balance of minerals and trace elements to the rumen as well as supplementing
rumen protein in the form of urea.
Urea Warning:
Urea is a very
cheap source of protein. Every kilo of urea can be converted into
2.6 kilos of protein equivalent in the rumen by the micro-organisms.
However, there are certain conditions where urea, when it forms
ammonia in the rumen, can cause fatal intoxication. This is urea
poisoning. These conditions arise when the animal is starved, or
has been on dry feed for a period of time and loosing weight and
so the microbial population is depleted. Urea can also cause toxicity
when it is absorbed into water and this water is consumed. Eg: when
blocks are in puddles in the rain.
