Merino STUDMASTER

A PREMIX FOR SHEDDED SHEEP

When to Use Merino Studmaster:

1. When sheep are shedded and have a diet mostly of grain.

2. When incidence of urinary calculi (stones) are present in sheep. The large component of a shedded rams diet is grain but grains have an excess of phosphorus and this is the main cause of urinary calculi (Stones). Therefore, calcium needs to be supplemented to bring the calcium/phosphorus ratio into the required range.

Salt is also essential in the ration of shedded sheep and grain rations are often deficient in salt, reducing the rate of digestion. Salt increases water consumption and reduces the risk of stone formation.

Trace minerals will boost wool growth and improve crimp and brightness. The most important mineral supplements are iodine, selenium, cobalt and zinc. Copper is very important, but is often present at toxic levels in grain rations, especially if sulphur is lacking.

Before supplementing copper, make sure a deficiency is present. Methionine is a sulphur rich amino acid which is essential to wool growth, it is also the best ingredient which can be used to prevent stone formation. Vitamins should not need to be added to a good ration. However, Vitamin E deficiency does on occasion occur in the ram shed and it is safest to add it to the ration supplement.
