SEA SALT FLAKES
The ancient tradition of making sea salt into flakes is a closely guarded secret and has taken over a decade for Olsson Pacific to perfect. Olsson’s Sea Salt Flakes are made in the Spencer Gulf in South Australia.
Olsson’s Sea Salt Flakes are:
We have identified two distinct types of sea salt flake within each flaker pan:
Olsson’s Macrobiotic Sea salt is made by the action of sun and wind on sea water from the Great Barrier Reef. When the salt is ready, it is harvested by hand and then allowed to drain (of excess sea water) in the sun before being packaged. It is free from any processing, it is unrefined, unwashed and free from any additives or preservatives. This salt retains a pink-grey hue, being the most natural colour of seawater brine and a testament to the high natural balance of sea minerals and marine trace elements.
The literal meaning of “macrobiotic” is “the way of long life”. The term itself comes from Hippocrates (the so-called father of Western medicine), who invented it to describe healthy, long-lived individuals. A macrobiotic diet (or macrobiotics), is a dietary regimen which involves eating grains as a staple food, supplemented with other foods such as local vegetables, and avoiding the use of highly processed or refined foods and most animal products.
Hippocrates discovered the qualities of seawater when he first noticed the beneficial effects it had on the injured hands of fisherman, reducing infection risks, but also assisting with pain relief. It is now believed that sea water is effective in assisting in the rejuvenation of the cells and also induces a healthy exchange of minerals and toxins between the blood and the water.
The sense in which Olsson’s has used this term refers to products or food that have had a minimum of human intervention in their manufacture or production. Macrobiotics is about food from the Earth. It is based on the Eastern ideal of achieving harmony between yin and yang. And while rooted in ancient tradition, the idea of the macrobiotic dietary approach is a remarkably modern way of eating.
Unlike common salt (which is just sodium chloride), natural Sea Salt (from sea water) contains sodium as well as other many important trace minerals in a balance similar to the extra cellular fluids in the body. One of the key benefits of Macrobiotic Sea Salt is that sea water (from which Olsson’s Macrobiotic Sea Salt is made) has a relative mineral composition almost identical with that of the blood, so when sodium is excreted from the body, other essential minerals salts such as potassium, magnesium and trace elements are also excreted.
As the seawater for the Macrobiotic Sea Salt slowly moves from ocean to salt pan, its salt content keeps rising and the salt crystals are enriched with health-enhancing minerals. The lower sodium content allows for more bioavailable magnesium (in chloride form), calcium and potassium, as well as trace elements such as copper, zinc, iron, manganese, and even minute amounts of iodine and fluoride. Being totally natural – it is unrefined and unwashed and contains no additives – Olsson’s Macrobiotic sea salt retains all these qualities.
Olsson’s Macrobiotic Sea Salt is the first natural “celtic-style” or “grey” sea salt (they call it sel gris in France) produced in Australia. This salt actually tastes like the ocean.
Macrobiotic Rock Sea Salt
Olsson’s Macrobiotic Rock Sea Salt remains free from additives or preservatives and retains a high level of natural marine minerals and trace elements. It is suitable for cooking, for grinders and for bathing.
